Five Big African News Stories This Week

Here are five stories from across Africa that caught my attention this week.

1. Renewed fighting in Ethiopia

Fighting has erupted again in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, raising fears that the country could slide back toward the kind of devastating conflict that ended only a few years ago.

2. Africa’s economy showing resilience

The World Bank has raised its 2026 growth forecast for Sub-Saharan Africa to 4.3%. That’s encouraging news, although high debt and slow improvements in living standards remain major problems.

3. Ebola outbreak in Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to grow rapidly. Health workers are dealing with the additional challenges of violence, shortages and misinformation.

4. New efforts to end Sudan’s war

Diplomatic efforts are continuing to try to end Sudan’s brutal civil war. The conflict has displaced millions and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

5. South Africans facing higher fuel prices

South Africa is preparing for a sharp increase in gasoline and diesel prices as higher international energy costs work their way into the country's economy.

A lot is happening across Africa right now—some encouraging economic news mixed with serious wars, health emergencies and economic pressures. It’s a continent worth watching closely.

Prayer for Africa

Lord God, please watch over the people of Ethiopia, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Nigeria and every country across Africa.

Bring peace where there is war, healing where there is sickness, food and shelter where there is suffering, and wisdom to those in positions of authority. Protect innocent families and children, strengthen those who are helping others, and give courage to Christians who are serving in difficult places.

Open doors for the Gospel throughout Africa, and draw people everywhere to Jesus Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
